Baby Crib Safety - Frequently Asked Questions

The crib is where your baby will spend a lot of their time and you want to be sure they are safe. Below are some of the questions (with the answers) that are asked about crib safety. Topics such as mattress position, how to place your baby in the crib, and general safety standards are discussed, as are other issues. If you need further information you can search the Internet and visit baby furniture stores.

Q. Are there safety standards for baby cribs?

Yes there are some very exact standards for your baby's crib. In 1974 it was made law that cribs should no longer be painted with lead based paint. It was discovered that the ingestion of lead (from any source) could cause learning disabilities and other difficulties in young children. The slats of the crib must be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart, this is to prevent your baby from getting his body or head stuck between the bars causing injury or strangulation. The side bar should be 26 inches above the mattress when it is in its lowest position. If your child is more than an inch taller than the sidebar it is time to move him into a regular bed.

Q. Are there some hazards in my baby's crib that I need to be aware of?

Your mattress must fit snugly in the crib; an ill-fitting mattress could cause your baby to slip between the mattress and the side bar causing suffocation. The mattress height should be able to be adjusted into at least three different levels. When your baby becomes more mobile you will want to put the mattress in the lowest position to prevent your baby from climbing or falling out. The slats should be tight, loose slats could pinch little fingers. Do not put the crib near a window to prevent your baby from possibly falling out or becoming tangled in Venetian blind cords.

Q. What are some historical facts about the crib?

Here is a short chronological time line of crib facts:

1973 - The standard for crib slats was to be no more than 2 3/8th inches apart to prevent your baby from slipping through or getting their head stuck. Also, double latches for drop-down sidebars were to become the norm.

1976 - The standard for cutouts in the crib end panels are presented. The end panels must not have any decorative cutout designs. Children were getting their limbs or heads caught causing serious injury or death.

1978 - Cribs must now be painted with non-toxic finish.

1981 - Two models of cribs with cutouts are recalled.

1988 - A voluntary standard addresses mattress support hardware, failure of glued or bolted connections, drop-side latch failure and loosened teething rails.

1990 - No corner posts or projections can be more than 1/16th of an inch above the drop-side.

1998 - California and Washington mandate that hotel cribs must meet the same standards set for full-size cribs

1998 - Portable cribs must now meet the same standards as full-sized cribs.

Q. How can I tell when my baby is ready for a regular bed?

When your child stands more than a couple of inches taller than the sidebar with the mattress in the lowest position. If your child is climbing out of the crib, for his safety put him in a regular bed.

Q. How should I put my baby to sleep in his crib?

Place your baby on his back or on his side for sleeping. Use one piece sleepers rather than blankets. Your baby could slip under the blanket and possibly suffocate. Remove all pillows and toys as well, in order to prevent suffocation.

Q. Is it safe to cover my baby with a blanket?

A blanket sleeper will keep your baby sufficiently warm while sleeping. If you absolutely need to use a blanket, tuck it in around the bottom of the mattress. Place your baby with his feet toward the end-panel and the blanket should go no higher than his/her chest.

Q. Is a mesh sided crib safe to use for my baby?

Yes, a mesh crib is safe provided the mesh is less than 1/4 inch in size, smaller than a tiny button on baby's clothes. The should be rips, tears, or loose threads. If staples are used to attach the mesh they must not be exposed and the mesh must be securely attached to the top rail and the floor plate.

Q. Can I safely use bumper pads in my baby's crib?

While bumper pads are not necessary, they can safely be used. They must be very close the edge of the mattress and properly secured. The bumpers must be flat and not puffy, as your baby could get stuck between the bumper and the mattress and suffocate.

Q. What can I do to keep my baby's crib safe?

In order to keep your baby's a safe place, you should make sure to all connections are secure and that there are no broken or missing parts. Regularly, check the teething rail for splits or cracks. Make sure the mattress spring support and your crib will withstand your baby's increasing mobility. The mattress itself should have no splits, tears, or holes.

Q. How can I tell when it's time to lower the mattress?

When your baby becomes more active, when s/he begins to pull himself to a standing position or when he sits up alone it will be time to lower the mattress to prevent your little one from either climbing out or falling out.

Q. Can I hang a mobile over my baby's crib?

Mobiles and crib gyms can be used to entertain your baby but when your child is able to get on to their hands and knees or pull themselves up. This will prevent your baby from becoming entangled in them.

In Conclusion

Making sure your baby's crib is safe, is an ongoing to task. Proper positioning of the mattress, making sure all connections are secure and that there are no loose slats that could pinch little fingers will help to keep your baby's crib a safe place for him to be. Be sure to place him in the crib on his back or side and dress him in a sleeper rather than using a blanket. Keeping these tips in mind will help keep your baby safe and give you some peace of mind.

Have a New Born in the Family? Here are Some Easy Ways to Save Money.

Copyright 2006 Debt Management Credit Counseling Corp.

Boca Raton, FL – Everyone knows the cost of raising a child has dramatically increased throughout the years. With all the new styles of clothing, diapers and kinds of baby food, these items are more expensive than they once were. Here are a few simple ways to save.

Breastfeeding

The first and easiest way to save money is breastfeeding. Besides all the natural benefits of breastfeeding, it will save you thousands of dollars yearly on buying baby formula.

Make Your Own Baby Food

When you are shopping down the baby isle at your local grocery store, baby food does not seem that expensive. But, what people do not realize is how little food and how much water is actually in the jar. You can buy apples to make homemade apple sauce. You can mash bananas, pears and peaches. Or just throw a bunch of fruit in a blender. Your baby will get more nutrients eating your homemade baby food than it will eating jar baby food. Home made food also cuts down on preservatives. So why not make your baby's food? It is healthier and will save you money.

Use Cloth Diapers

With cloth diapers, you spend money once and they last until your child outgrows them. The beauty with the cloth diapers is you can buy a week's worth for your baby and wash them in cycles. The diapers can be an investment if you are planning on having another child. The few extra dollars on your water bill will not even come close to the amount you would spend buying disposable diapers.

Share Toys and Clothing with Friends Who Have Children

There is nothing wrong when your infant gets tired of a toy to exchange it with a friend's baby. This way both families will not have to buy new toys all the time. Also, never turn down somebody who offers you free toys. Many times at birthday parties, babies get an enormous amount of toys as gifts. Many families do not have the storage for all those toys or their children outgrow them. If someone offers you toys, accept their offer. Same thing goes with clothing. Babies can grow out of their clothing at an extremely fast rate. If you know someone whose baby is six months to a year old, I am sure your friend would rather give you hand me downs than donating them to a thrift store. This will save you tons of money.

Baby Shower Cakes - More Than Just Dessert

A baby shower is a way for family and friends to celebrate the expected arrival of a new baby with the parents-to-be. It is a joyous occasion and fun for all! But hosting a great baby shower takes some real planning. A very important part of the planning process is the cake. Every baby shower needs a cake, but the cake can serve as more than just a dessert--it can also double as a decoration, even a centerpiece!

Most baby showers have a theme, and the entire party is based on that theme. The cake is no exception and should also follow whatever theme you've chosen. If you're talented and can bake and decorate a cake (or know someone who can), you may want to have a home-made cake. Or you can order one from a bakery, making sure you place your order in plenty of time for the shower.

Once you've decided whether it will be home-made or store-bought, you will need to decide what type of cake to have. There are many different varieties of baby shower cakes to choose from. Some of them are listed below:

· Angelfood cake · Butter cake · Butterfly cake · Carrot cake · Cheesecake · Chocolate cake · Chiffon cake · Cupcake · Devil's food cake · Fruit cake · Gingerbread · Ice cream cake · Mooncake · Pineapple upside down cake · Pound cake · Spice cake · Sponge cake

Then there's the filling to consider:

· more icing · different flavors of fruit preserves · pudding · custard · whipped cream · jams · peanut butter · pure chocolate

Not only should you consider what type of cake to have but also how you might be able to decorate the cake in a way that will make the baby shower celebration more special. Here are some ideas:

1. Belly Cake. One great idea is to design a baby shower cake and make it look like a pregnant belly. This can be done by placing a circular cake in front of a rectangular cake and frosting them together to resemble that of a pregnant belly.

2. Toy Blocks Cake. Another idea is to design a baby shower cake and make it look like children's toy blocks (either one large block or 3 to 4 smaller blocks). Toy block cakes can be further enhanced by surrounding them with candies or little toy cars.

3. An Autograph Cake. This is a great idea where "Congratulations" is the only word on the cake, leaving room for each of the guests to "sign" their own name in icing. A picture of the cake is taken when everyone has signed it, making a great keepsake for the parents-to-be.

4. A Character Cake. The cake can be made in the form of a character, such as Pooh Bear.

5. A Baby Bib Cake. Another idea similar to the character cake, but the cake looks like a baby bib.

There are so many different things you can do with a baby shower cake. Here are just a few other suggestions for cake shapes:

Baby Buggy Baby Booties Bassinet Baby Bottle Noah's Ark

There's also a "diaper" cake. But watch out--it's really made of diapers and not edible!

Of course, you can also experiment with creative ideas of your own, or check out the cake design book at your local grocery store or bakery for ideas. Remember that the 'goal' is not only to make a yummy dessert, but also a great centerpiece or decoration that will stand out in the memories of the parents-to-be. But don't forget, stick to the baby shower theme!

Getting ready for a newborn is very much exciting. There is so much to do to keep your baby comfortable and happy that sometimes you might not know where to begin. You have to make your house cosy, clean, and comfortable for the baby that is safe from any hazards or harmful illness.

Here are some tips to help prepare your house for your new arrival.

1. It is important to make your home and surrounding child safe. Child's curiosity knows no bounds and they grow very fast. Put all sharp objects in a place where the child cannot reach. Keep all electrical fittings covered. You may need to buy a special car seat for your new baby.

2. Store all chemicals up and away, properly sealed and labelled. Commonly used substances like detergent, aftershave, alcohol can be toxic to the baby. A locked storage space like high cabinets is best.

3. Disconnect electrical rollers, hair dryers from the plug point, when not in use. Look at your corners, there may lay some unnecessary wires, sockets etc. Throw them away.

4. Store all the plastic wrapping materials, dry cleaning bags, plastic food wrap away from the children. They are a common cause of suffocation.

5. You may require a cradle for the baby to sleep beside you after birth. A diaper changing table you may need-a firm hard table with a soft mattress that you can the little one while changing diaper. It is better if you add some drawers to it so that you can keep baby's clothes, creams, shampoos, medicines inside it.

Baby Monitors Explained

Baby monitors are an essential part of baby gear. When you have the baby asleep in the crib, you don't have to keep constantly checking to make sure that he/she is all right when you have a baby monitor. You have one part of the monitor in the nursery and the other in the same room of the house where you are. Every move and sound that the baby makes come through the speaker so it is almost like you are in the same room.

The transmitters in the monitors work best when they are within 10 feet of the baby. This is why you should have the monitor on a nightstand near the crib, but yet you don't need to have them so close that when the baby gets older, he/she can reach out and touch it. You can carry the receiver with you or leave it plugged in by your bed during the night. The basic models have a switch you use to turn them on and off and to adjust the volume. You can also use batteries when you want to take the receiver with you, rather than having to plug it into an outlet in each room.

Some of the monitors on the market have a light display that flashes to let you know when the baby is crying. You don't need to have the volume turned up if you use this feature, but it does mean that you have to keep looking at the monitor. Top of the line monitors have a camera (a video monitor) that you can attach to your VCR. This lets you watch the baby without actually being in the same room.

There are also disadvantages to using a baby monitor. If you have a cordless phone, the baby monitor can pick up the conversation so you need to be discreet. Even talking in the same room as the baby will transfer the sound of your voice to the receiver, so you can't complain about visitors that won't go home. In once case we had neighbors with the same monitor on the same frequency and we could hear their entire night-time routine if our monitor was on. You also have to make sure that you keep the monitors away from bathtubs and pools because they are electrical devices.

Overall a baby monitor is a very useful thing to have. They give you a sense of comfort and let you get on with your day while your child is sleeping. Never forget that a monitor can NEVER replace proper parental care. Never leave your baby unattended for long periods (even while sleeping chech on them from time to time).

Congratulations you're having a baby

So you're having a baby. First off, congratulations! However, having said that, there are a few things you need to know – things that people are unlikely to tell you about, but which might worry you if you don't know about them in advance.

You should know that when your baby is born, there is a high probability that it will look very strange indeed. Babies can often be born blue or grey, and may have a deformed head from having to fit through such a small gap. They are generally bloody and bruised, and may be covered in body hair, especially if they were born prematurely. All this adds up to a very startling sight if you weren't expecting it.

You shouldn't worry, though, as the baby will return to normal quite quickly – the skin will go the right colour after a few minutes, when the baby starts to breathe, and any head injuries and odd hair should clear up after a few days. Just realise that it will take a few weeks before your baby starts to look like the cute little thing you were expecting.

Of course, the next thing you need to know is just what you should do with the baby after that. The most important thing is to breastfeed the baby. Baby 'formula' is like junk food for babies, and you should avoid it at all costs – it lacks most of the natural nutrients the baby needs, and will instead fill your baby with whatever chemicals you have in your water supply. Babies can see, hear and smell, although not very well, and the most important thing is for the baby to be near its mother – the sight of her, the sound of her voice and the smell and taste of her milk will soothe it better than any toy or gadget ever could.

A Little Advice For New Parents

As a new parent you face many problems and issues that you need to understand and deal with immediately. Newborns do not come with an instruction book so here is some information on some things that you need to know about.

Bathing your baby: Your baby's umbilical cord will fall off in about one to two weeks after they are born. Until it falls out, you should only give your baby sponge baths. You could dampen a cotton ball or cotton swab with alcohol to help dry the umbilical stump or simply follow your pediatrician's directions. You can give him a bath in a sink or shallow tub after the stump falls off.

Caesarian delivery: A caesarian is usually performed to make delivery safer for you or your baby. C-sections can be done for many different reasons including stalled labor, complicated labor, problems with the baby that may make delivery difficult, or other problems. It does not matter if you deliver vaginally or by a caesarian section, you are still a mother with a beautiful new blessing.

Circumcision: A lot of doctors feel that there are many benefits to having your baby circumcised, but it may not be absolutely necessary. It may help to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections and eliminates just about any chance of penile cancer. Circumcision will not cause any long-term emotional problems for your child.

Crib death (SIDS): Many studies have been done regarding SIDS. Although the cause of SIDS has not been definitely defined, there are some correlations that have been made between SIDS and the following things: Female babies are less likely to die from SIDS than Male Babies The risk is greater with premature birth Minority children are more likely to be affected by SIDS than non-minority children are. More children of young, single mothers die of SIDS Smoking in the home greatly increases the risk of SIDS

Some people think that sleeping with your baby is okay and continue to let their babies sleep with them. The American Academy of Pediatrics disagrees with this and says that there is a greater risk of SIDS in babies who sleep with another person. Babies should sleep alone in a cradle or crib either next to or near an adult. You should never put pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or anything that might put your baby at risk in their bed.

Most pediatricians recommend that babies sleep on their back to decrease the risk of SIDS. The reason for this is widely debated between health experts. If you have concerns please talk to your pediatrician. There are no dumb questions when it comes to the health and safety of your child, so please don't be afraid to ask for help.

Free Printable Baby Shower Games: A Wise Choice?

Free printable baby shower games refer to the printable materials that can be downloaded from the Internet without any charge.

With these printable materials, the organizers of the party will no longer have to delve more on explaining to the audience the mechanics of the game. Plus, the games will look more presentable instead of getting some pieces of scratch paper with jumbled words and phrases that the guests will find it hard to understand.

Hence, with these printable baby shower games that can be downloaded for free, your activity will appear more coordinated and well-organized than just distributing pieces of paper to the guests to play.

Moreover, the parents would appreciate it more if they see that you take extra effort in getting printable baby shower games, even if it just for free than just get some sloppy baby shower games that can be obtained anywhere.

Free Baby Shower Games versus Free Printable Baby Shower Games As they say, the best things in life are free. However, not all free things are created equal.

Take for example the free baby shower games and the printable ones but still free of charge. They are both free and without any charge. But the two are distinct items that really differ in a lot of aspects.

In most cases, free baby shower games do not look good in terms of graphics and presentation unlike the printable ones.

What's more, the baby shower ideas from the list of baby shower games that are given for free are not that innovative, creative, and usually cannot be understood.

Unlike the free printable baby shower games, they really have these colourful designs and easy-to-understand baby shower games.

Actually, free baby shower games are not that superior-looking. But the fact that it looks better than those that are given for free or is more presentable than those that are written in a sheet of torn leaf of a notebook.

Besides, if you are to look at it on the other aspect, free printable baby shower games are not absolutely free. You still have to invest a little on the ink that you will use. Colorful designs would entail many colored inks.

Consequently, when the parents see the effort and the little investment you have made in order to come up with really nice baby shower games, your work will be more appreciated.

What most people do not know is that free printable baby shower games are categorized as free items because you can download them in the Internet without any download charges. But still, it requires some budget for the ink for you to be able to print them.

Moreover, one of the best things about free printable baby shower games is that you can even customized them to suit the personality of the mother or the mood of the occasion before you print them.

In turn, it will give a more personalized look on the baby shower games and no one would ever suspect that you have just downloaded from the Internet.

Free printable baby shower games can be really useful. In fact, it is considered as the greatest ice breaker especially if the guests in the baby shower party do not know each other or are not acquainted with each other.

The bottom line is that the preference of whether to obtain free baby shower games or free printable baby shower games is actually dependent on the situation. This means that if there is no budget for the baby shower games, then, it would be better to acquire baby shower games that are given for free.

But if, there is a little budget even for the ink alone and the paper that will be used, then, it would be best if you will obtain free printable baby shower games.

Therefore, whatever you choose, the key point is that you have to use it in order to make the event livelier and more fun.
